Original Fake x CLOT

October 22, 2008 · No Comments

These two entities seem to be up to something every time you turn the corner. Well, now their going to be around every corner together. By the looks of things to come it should be interesting. While I’m at it, I’m going to go out on a limb and say they will be dropping more than just your run of the mill tee. Ah, a bit of promise to start your day. Enjoy.

We just received and read the new Juxtapoz African Art issue

October 21, 2008 · No Comments

Jane Alexander

We opened our mailbox yesterday and saw an alarmingly beautiful image we did not expect to grace the cover of Juxtapoz. It was by Wangechi Mutu, a Kenyan-born artist who know lives in Brooklyn and is pretty much one of the most fantastic artists in the world today. Then we got to the feature with Jane Alexander, whose work is seen above and on the newsstand cover, and we bascially were quite impressed with what Jux came up with.

Its a big issue too, probably the biggest they have had. And there is a very academic, ball-busting essay by curator and philosopher Simon Njami to kick off the issue, which puts Art Forum on notice.

In all, this is the best Jux of the year. It different, the art is expansive, the profiles have bugged out artists, the features are plenty, and the shots from Estevan and Dragonette are top notch.

Straight from the brilliant mind of toy designer Frank Kozik come two stunning new statuettes. The “Ludwig Van” bust is a collaboration with LUDWIG, which recreates the upstart label’s Alex DeLarge-inspired take on the classical composer in neon blue and green vinyl, while the “Ho Chi Minh” depicts the communist leader dressed as a soldier, in a bright purple finish. Both retail at $200 USD, with only 50 of each available. Available now at your local toy retailers.

Banksy - The Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill

October 12, 2008 · No Comments

Always one for causing a stir, Banksy has been doing just that while visiting New York City. After completing two large building-sized murals, the renowned graffiti artist has now created a storefront that is, in actuality, a fully-interactive art exhibition. “The Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill“, located at 89 7th Avenue between W 4th and Bleeker, shows off Banksy’s penchant for the bizarre. With creepy animatronic animals and oddities at every turn, this is definitely a unique, must-see exhibit that will both disturb and amaze you. If you live or are visiting New York, make sure to take a look before the shop closes for good on October 31st

Vinyl Answer: Mexican Summer’s Record Club

September 27, 2008 · No Comments

mexican0926a.jpg

Ah, the old pleasures of vinyl records—laying that giant black disc on a turntable, gently placing the needle into the spinning grooves. It’s a physical as well as a sonic experience that all you iPods and MP3s just can’t match. Collecting new titles on vinyl, however, is often a chore that makes you appreciate the iTunes store even more. Thankfully, there’s Mexican Summer, a boutique music label that offers the latest titles by new, cutting-edge artists in big, beautiful vinyl wrapped in big, beautiful album jackets. Pressed in limited runs of 1,000 to 500 copies each, Mexican Summer offers albums from acts such as Dungen, Nachtmystium, Bobby BeauSoleil & The Orkustra, and many others. For those of you who just can’t put your iPhones away, the service backs up every vinyl purchase with a downloadable digital version of the music so you can take it to go. With three albums released every other month, you’d best stock up on those old milk crates—your collection is about to explode.

Henry Lewis Interview

September 19, 2008 · No Comments

Born in Los Angeles and having moved up to SF 8 years ago, Henry has learned and became one of the best tattoo artists working in San Francisco today. I’d first met Henry years back. Like a tornado he’d swoop into the bar, buy me a shot and then he’d be gone, off to his studio to work throughout the night on his oil paintings. I never knew how he did it. Tattoo all day, drink till 2am and then work till dawn. I envy people who don’t need sleep. They get so much done. And Henry, not only got shit done, he got great work done. And resembling his tattoo career, his painting career has also been a quick asent passing many along the way. The guy is a pure talent… We got a chance to ask him a few questions before his show with Keli Reule opens at 111 Minna here in San Francisco on October 2nd.

Describe your process of creating a new piece. What materials do you normally work in?

I normally work in oil. I took half a year off of oil to start over, put it aside so to speak. My process for starting a new piece is inspired by the people I meet, and friends, along with day-to-day living. My favorite ones however are the people that inspire me to live. I like living slightly vicariously through these people’s stories. Slightly. Ever so slightly… Oh, and I normally work with oil, but lately I’ve been working with Gouache.

If you had to explain your work to a stranger, how would you do it?

To quote my friend Jordan Varay, I would say my style is “Baroque as fuck.” Hahaha!

Tell us a bit about your upcoming show at 111 Minna. What can we expect?

Awesome. My upcoming show at 111 Minna has some of the same ideas and iconography as my last show at Corey Helford, but I wanted to change mediums to represent moving to the new shop, trying to reinvent myself as a tattooer, and the shift from my old ways at the old shop. Tattoo flash is traditionally painted in water color, so I’m using water color and gouache as a kind of tribute to tattoo and moving from one place to another. Oils are amazing and fun, my favorite medium. I’m not quitting oil, just putting it down for a minute to breathe. I’m just having fun using a medium that I’m not all that familiar with. There are a few portraits of people that I really admire for the way they live their lives and who they are. I’ve also gone a lot bigger than in the past, trying to play with value. I’m trying to push myself and having fun doing it. After this show I’m going to take a year off from showing, with the exception of a couple group shows, so that I can work on an upcoming show at Corey Helford, which will be March 6th, 2010.

La Noche en Blanco: Perpetual Sunshine

September 18, 2008 · No Comments

perpetualsunshine.jpg

Around three in the morning last Sunday, several hours into Madrid’s La Noche en Blanco festival, I stumbled to Plaza Vazquez de Mella in search of Perpetual Sunshine. The brainchild of meteorologists, interior designers, and club kids, the exhibit is composed of 334 infrared bulbs that are wired to a computer. Using conditions of anywhere in the world where the sun is shining, the computer calibrates the bulbs accordingly. In this case, the machine adjusted the intensity of light and temperature to reflect the conditions of an ambiguous global zone that borders the Tropic of Capricorn (i.e. a tropical paradise), much to the pleasure of all spectators involved.

They also offered lounge chairs for those who were so inclined, but I preferred to continue exploring. See the video here.
